It is difficult today to find an industry or business today that does not use a computer in some capacity. Skilled support professionals are in high demand.

    Topics convered in the Computer and Network Systems program at Riverbend Professional Technical Academy (RPTA) include basic skills needed to repair and maintain computer systems, using a variety of hardware and software. Students are exposed to hands-on training to gain experience installing operating system software, application software and local area network installation and support.


Entrance Requirements

1.Must be a high school junior or senior in good standing at their home school (academics, attendance, ect.).

2.Must meet state prerequsites for each course and possess skills in foundation courses.

3. Must complete the admission application and screening process, including a personal interview with the instructor.

4. Must demonstrate professional behavior in dress, grooming and attitude.

Computer Repair & Maintenance

    This portion of the course provides students with the skills needed to troubleshoot, repair and maintain computers. Instruction in the installation and configuration of computer systems, hard drives and a variety of peripherals with operating sysytems is provided leading to A+ Certification.

 

Cisco Systems

    This component teaches students the basics of internetworking, where they gain experience configuring fully operational Cisco routers. Through lecture, discussion, exercises and lab projects, students learn to apply Cisco IOS ( Internetworking Operating Systems) software commands to start up and configure a newly installed router.

 

Employment Opportunities

    In 1998, the U.S.federal government revised its estimate of unfulfilled Information Technology (IT) jobs, bumping the figure to 1.3 million in the next ten years.

    As desperate as companies are, they are not hiring unskilled employees and technology is expanding at a much faster rate than the supply of skilled workers.

    The average starting salary for professionals skilled in computer support ranges from $26,000 to $36,000 annually.
